So I started this book and was instantly worried I wasn't going to like it. The first half was almost too much like Twilight for me (And those of you who know me know that I am not a fan of Twilight). However, by the last half of the book I was hooked. The adventure and mayhem really started to get going and it was more like the Morganville Vampires than Twilight. The ending left off in such a way that I wanted to scream "NOOOOO!!!!" And I am now (impatiently) waiting for the next book. I think Laney was a good build up for this series and I am fully intending to read the rest of the Brookehaven Vampires series! But I have to say my favorite part of this book is the diversity. Not only is there vampires and werewolves, she also states that unicorns, leprechauns, and DRAGONS are real! Whoo-hoo!!! I love me some dragons! lol Joann I. Martin Sowles really started this series off with a bang! Laney, the first in the Brookehaven Vampires series comes out in October and I recommend you give it a read! (Also, I'm calling it now, I think the mysterious coven leader, D, is Laney's dad. Let me know if you think so too!)

[Laney] would make a wonderful addition to any fantasy fiction lovers library. This page turner pulls you in until you feel like you are living it! When I finally would pry myself away from the book, I found myself trying to sneak ways to read it during class. It keeps you on your seat wanting more and more.” Brittany Booker

‘Laney’ is a story about a young college sophomore girl launched into her second year of school with her best friend Kiera. They experience many dramas that young people bump into when living close to campus and it follows Laney’s infatuation with a beautiful male vampire named Oliver and Kiera’s interest in their mutual friend Carter. This story is jam-packed with comedic elements that kept me laughing and the unexpected supernatural characters that come out of the shadows kept me very interested, curious and excited.
‘Laney’, part one of the ‘The Brookehaven Vampires’ series written by Joann I. Martin Sowles is due for release on October 30, 2010 and Pre-orders are being taken online at http://www.brookehavenvampires.com/.
It really is a great tale filled with fun twists, humor, romance, and embarrassing moments. My age recommendation based on the maturing feelings of young adult sexuality would be that it is an appropriate read for older teenagers and an adult audience.
I was looking for things that would set it apart from other popular vampire series and was pleasantly surprised that Joann had created something new, interesting, fun to read and really has me begging for more.

As soon as I started reading this I found it really hard to put down. It is an amazing book that kept me guessing as to what would happen next. The two main characters are Laney and Oliver and I found myself clicking with them right away. Laney reminds me of myself at 18. And reading her story reminded me of that first love feeling when she meets Oliver, who is absolutely gorgeous. Oliver is very interesting and his story and his family’s story will leave you wanting more.
Laney is Joann I. Martin Sowles debut novel and first in The Brookehaven Vampire Series. Reading I honestly wouldn’t have thought it was her first novel and was written perfectly. She has managed to intertwine many twists and turns throughout the novel that will keep the reader engrossed in the story.
This is a great tale full of great twists, romance and some great humour and a few embarrassing moments for the characters that I found myself laughing out loud at. I recommend this to anyone who loves vampires.
Thank you Joann for this chance to read this fantastic tale before its official released date and I am now waiting (not so) patiently for the next installment to find out what happens next. Laney is one of my favourite books now.

Laney and Kiera are your typical teen students; love to party, love to mingle with others, and love to catch the perfect guy, Oliver to be precise. Laney does…but doesn’t realize what she got herself into just yet.
Miss Sowles captures the young adult voice, moves the story forward with vivid descriptions and that necessary, suspenseful pull ‘are they going to hook up? What’s going to happen?’
I have to admit, however, the story reminded me of The Vampire Diaries and Twilight, where young human girls fall for the wrong type…vampires. Regardless, the twists and adventure in this book does hold its own, making it a quick and fun read. Being a vampire fiction lover, these similarities to these other books didn’t sway me. The important aspect for me was that the author was able to authenticate her own characters and make them believable to me, to pull me into their storyline. From the way the book ended I’m assuming a follow-up will be published to make this into a series, and I’m looking forward following Laney, Oliver, Kiera, and the others to new adventures.

I've read The Brookehaven Vampire: Laney, I have to say it's a great read. I couldn't put the book down for a second. This book had me giggling like a teenager. I so want to go back to my teenage years, the excitement of meeting the boy of your dreams, the fluttering in your stomach, it was beautifully put together. This book was as if it were written by a teenager. Joann, hit the nail right in the head with this one. I was going up and down with Laney throughout the whole book. Oliver and Laney make the perfect couple. I now want my very own emerald eyed dream boat!
If you guys had the honor of getting a copy of this book, you were truly gifted. When October 30th comes out, I will definitely be getting another copy. I cannot wait to see the final product as well as the next book. We need more books like these out! Everyone on my Vampires Anonymous page is looking forward to its release date! V—V

Laney meets Oliver during a class and fireworks exploded. Everywhere she turns he's there. He saved from a vampire attack and secrets are exposed. Ok the secrets, I must say Ms. Sowles had me all work up here. I heard who people really were and was just sucked in to finish the book right away. The mysterious part of it was great.
The relationship between Oliver and Laney was beautiful. Usually when I read book, I love romance and how it all comes together. Sometimes the author just throws everything in quickly making the couple fall in love super fast without no pretense. With Oliver and Laney it was different. They got to know each other, spend time with each other. I was happy to get a great insight in there relationship. I also love the devotion that Oliver gives Laney. He is so loving, yet protective. Just like the kind of man I love. He loved her truly and show it immensely.
The vampire culture in this book was good. Like Bonding. Which I like. It was something different and not what you read about in many books. The are other aspects of this vampire culture different from whats out there. That is a plus.
Ms. Sowles did a great job writing this. I can't wait to read her next book and see what else she has in store for us. Her debut of this book definitely had me hooked and wanting more!!!

Regardless of whether you prefer your paranormal novels to be about undying love, action packed adventures, or unique characters you will enjoy reading Laney because this novel has it all.
We really appreciated that the character was old enough to truly understand the meaning of love. We also liked that she lived on her own and thus there is not a glaring absence of a parental figure. Lastly, it was refreshing to meet a spicy, hot vamp who isn't hundreds of years old! Laney and Oliver's love story also realllllly heats up the page! :-P
The plot reads like a movie in that it is filled with vivid fight scenes and a constant thread of suspense about what is really going on and what is going to happen. We are also left with a cliffhanger at the end that expertly surprises the reader and makes us want more. (I even had turned the page without realizing that was the end! -Jas)
Like all novels, there were some aspects that we did not like. For example, the characters' language does not employ a sufficient use of slang, and at times the love between Oliver and Laney does get a bit dramatic.
But overall, we did enjoy reading this novel and we sincerely thank the author for giving us a chance to review her first writing venture!

With all the rage of one of the newest genres, Vampires and Paranormal, Martin Sowles, The Brookehaven Vampires did an exceptional job of writing this novel and it's a terrific addition to any library. College student Delaney "Laney" Alexander meets her newest classmate, the stunning Oliver Knight, during English class. The tender and young romance blooms while the duo race against time to save themselves from the evil of another vampire seeking revenge. Get caught up in the adventure as Laney and Oliver discover love while fending off wickedness.
Martin Sowles takes the time to explain vampire life, paranormal answers and this book is a great young adult novel. While I'm partial to YA books, I find the book of interest for adults as well.
The story is smooth, kept my interest from page one and is a must have. I highly recommend The Brookehaven Vampires- Laney. The ending if the book is a cliffhanger that left me wanting more immediately.

Laney Alexander, a typical sophomore college student, is finally free from her overprotective aunt and is ready to experience life with her best friend Kiera. On her first day back to college, she encounters the handsome, charming, and mysterious Oliver Knight that's in all of her classes, not to mention shares the same apartment building as her. As they begin spending every minute of the day together, they immediately fall for one another. But Laney soon learns that life with Oliver is anything but normal. As they must fight for their lives and love, against Oliver's evil brother, Laney really does experience the thrills of life like she wanted.
From page 222
There was a snarl behind us. We all spun around and through the craze of the crowd we saw a vampire
coming at us with his fangs bared. He looked feral and insane. His eyes bore down on us with a demonic leer and I scrambled to get closer to Oliver. He was
getting closer faster than should've been possible.
This book has a mixture of just about everything: paranormal creatures, nail-biting suspense, sexy romance, sarcastic humor, and kick-butt action scenes. I've read so many vampire books lately that all seem alike, so I started this one expecting the same thing over again. During the first half, I wasn't too thrilled because it felt like I was simply re-reading Twilight. Oliver's personality was pretty much identical to Edward's and a few of the scenes were similar to Twilight, too. His unnatural beauty was mentioned on like every page near the beginning, but thankfully he didn't sparkle! However, once their undying love for each other was fully developed and some problems started to arise, the novel became its own. I really liked the author's unique spin off of vampires and their lifestyles, it was different than any other vampire book I've read - I especially liked the 'bonding' idea she created. I surprisingly didn't have a single question either! Usually with paranormal books I have many unanswered questions, but I was delighted to easily understand exactly how the vampire life worked.
Oh man, the steamy chemistry between Oliver and Laney was ridiculous, in a good way; they were made for each other! Even if you're not a vampire lover, but enjoy romance books, then I insist that you read this book. The hardcore kissing scenes and cute flirting between the couple were so romantic and sweet. Since the two of them are mature and in college, I could easily believe their love rather than in some young adult books where they are 'in love' by the third chapter. The author did a fantastic job at creating and developing this love at a nice pace.
I could definitely see this book/series becoming a movie in due time. The adventure and action scenes were brilliant and I couldn't put the novel down. Characterization was spot-on and I really stepped into Laney's mind and seemed to become her and experience the novel through her eyes. One thing that was a big issue for me though was all of the many grammatical errors. I'm not sure why, since I was reading the actual book and not an ARC, but it seemed like I found an error on every other page! However, that's about the only complaint I can think of about this wonderful book. I urge everyone to read it - well that is, older teenagers because of the romance. I can't wait to read the next installment in the series! Joann Sowles is an author to watch.
Cover Thoughts: It's just alright to me - the colors and picture were chosen well, but it doesn't scream originality or anything

Joann is very descriptive with her characters. She is so descriptive, that you instantly bond and become attached to the characters. It reminds me of the movie Goodfellas, in which you are taken right in the beginning of the movie and introduced to every character, learning about their detailed and sordid history. Joann does that with her own characters, you will learn about their intimate lives, their love interest and everything else that makes them human or vampire. You will find it fascinating how Laney learns about the Brookehaven Vampires. You will be held spellbound on how a vampire named Oscar grabs Laney. Laney is in fear of her life. Oliver, her love interest tries to save her, as he is held down by vampire minions. Secrets are revealed, Laney notices she is surrounded by bloodthirsty vampires with fangs bearing...
Laney learns that Oliver is hiding secrets from her, it has something to do with his sister.....
Oliver in a moment of strength throws off the minions who hold him down. With Olivers' identity revealed, he is thrust into a moment of desperation.....he has Laney to save! You the reader will learn what blood lust is all about...the desire to have flesh-from-the-vein blood! There are many shocking moments to this story, some seductive moments, some intriging moments, some horrifying moments.
You will be glued to your seat with Laney - the Brookehaven Vampires, this is a book that unfolds in your hands like a Summer blockbuster movie! Standing ovation to Joann I. Martin Sowles!
I read this book over the weekend and have put off writing this review because at times I really loved it and then at other times I found myself wanting to skip bits and read ahead (but I didn't).
Laney as a character was likeable and funny and I love lucky charms as much as she does.
Oliver is super hot and total lovable(where do I find him lol).
Laney and Oliver were so cute together and I could not help but get behind them and root for them as a couple.
I wished we had seen more of Laney and Oliver's friends in the book and hope the next book has more of them in it. I all so want to know more about Laney's dad I so have an idea to who he is and can't wait to see if I am right.
Now I have written this review and had time to think about this book I think in a book universe full of vampire books with the like's of Twilight, HON, Evernight, and Blue Bloods, The Brookehaven Vampire series has earned a place in this universe.
Joann I Martin Sowles has written a story world I totally want to have a part in. Laney is a wonderful story and can't wait to read book two it is a must for any YA fan even if you don't like vamp books =)

Joann I Martin Sowles brings us Laney
I love what this new author has done with this book. Laney is the first in the Brookehaven Vampire Series. We have been set up for this series to keep us anxiously awaiting the next!!!
Sowles has given us a story that starts right out and gets you interested. I definitely wanted to know Oliver…young and fresh romance wrapped in with action and plot. We’re set up that I can see many twists and turns left to come. We still have so much to go with this story. Sowles comments on another top YA that you’ll have to read to find out about…
Laney and Oliver share a hot connection. As a young college student, Laney is new to relationships, Oliver is an ‘old pro’. The references and comments in this book were straight from my time. I felt like this book is meant for the 25-35+ crowd. I related to Oliver although at some points he went a little old fashioned for my *coughs* crazy tastes. We end with a great cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the opportunity to read the next one!!! Could not put this one down!

English version (well...my personal "english"...)
Another vampire story? Yes it's true and honestly the first few pages I was not totally found of. The beginning of the novel is actually not very convincing to me: an American college, a beautiful heroine, a handsome hero ( a vampire of course) etc… Déjà vu, the only difference is that this time the hero rather have 20/22 years instead of 17.
Except that ....
Except that there is humor, oh not to roll over, but a slight derision, actually very nice. For example, when the group of friends, two boys, Oliver, our beautiful (needless to say) –vampire and two girls decided to watch a dvd and the girls picked up ... Twilight! Too funny! And the vampire grumbled something like "pffff, like vampires glowed in the sunshine".
And then comes the second part of the novel (the first part is, at least for my taste, too romantic). In this second part Laney finally discovers that Oliver is a vampire. What is surprising is that ... she does not look that surprised! As if they met the vampires at all street corners… Because obviously there will be a catch and Laney will have to face great dangers. Luckily Oliver will to defend it, but not only. There will be other vampires, "nice ones" who will have to fight the vampire “bad ones”and even werewolves. In this the kind will be helped by ... vampire slayers and believe me they do not look like Buffy!
The whole story finally sounds very nice and sincerely I would have liked to know more ... I would read with pleasure the Volume 2
The language used in the novel is very simple and it is very easy to read even for non-English speakers.
I'm sure this novel will appeal to all those who liked books such as Eternals from Alyson Noel, and even if it is not my “cup of tea” (because of the romance side) I had fun reading this book especially the second part.

“This is a warning. Continue reading at your own risk! Before you begin this story, there are a
few things that you must understand. First, this book is based on true and actual events, and, no, you will not be able to uncover these events on your own accord.
We go to great length to cover our ‘tracks,’ so to speak. You are about to enter into a world that you would be better off keeping your eyes blind to. Once you
know who and what is out there, they will know that you know about them and will take drastic measures to make sure you are kept silent. What you are unwisely
about to learn is to be kept strictly confidential. If you inform others we will know.”
This excerpt is taken from “A Message from the
Coven” in the beginning of the book and I love the build-up that the words create.
When I first picked up “Laney: The Brookehaven Vampires” I was a little leery as it seems that lately everyone is jumping on the “Twilight” craze bandwagon. Although there were quite a few similarities to the “Twilight” series of books, there were also enough differences to make “Laney: The Brookehaven Vampires” a book worth mentioning.
I really enjoyed the book. The characters were very intriguing and by the time the last page was turned I feel that knew them very well. The story flowed smoothly and was an easy read. This first book definitely piqued my interest for more and I look forward to reading the next installment in the Brookehaven series.

My thoughts: I just finished reading this book and it was amazing! I want more and I wanted it right now. I need to know what is going to happen next with these characters.
The action in this book is awesome. The characters are great. I love Laney and Oliver. They are the cutest couple and kept making me laugh. Though I do wish there was more of their friends.
I seriously need to know what is going to happen next. That is all I can think about.
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Would I recommend this book? Yes

Ok so I got this as an ARC from Joann herself. Gotta love her eh. And I absolutely loved it! There is a Great love interest in this book. Laney falls for a Gorgeous, mysterious new guy Oliver Knight. They fall for each other fast. The action is this book was great. I did not want to put it down. It is a great YA read. I love my vamps and everyone knows it and this was a great book. I cannot stress that enough. Mine is an ARC so there are still some errors but I guarantee that the edited version is amazing. I found myself laughing out loud during the book. It was funny and sad, heartwarming and action packed. I felt extremely connected to the characters and it made me want to read more.
Joann did an amazing job and I cannot wait to see what happens next with Laney and Oliver.

You got to give it to this author for creating an original. If you are looking for the next exciting vampire novel, this one should be your next book. Fall in love all over again, and believe everything your told not to believe in. Joann I. Martin Sowles just may put you under her spell. Highly recommended teens to adults.

Laney, Book 1 of The Brookehaven Vampire Series by Joann I. Martin Sowles is a young adult vampire novel that exceeds any expectation for young adult novels today. The main character Laney is a wonderful representation of what it would be like to today's world if a nineteen year old met a cute boy in class and he happened to be a vampire, or at least in our dreams. The setting in in the real world, a small college campus, and the events that take place are easily ones that readers can picture themselves in.
The author makes her book so enjoyable because she makes her books relative in today's world. There is a scene where Laney, Oliver, Carter, and Kiera is watching a movie- Twilight and Oliver looks to Laney and asks if she likes vampires. It's a creative way of Sowles bringing her world to the real world of today.
The story was very fast paced and full of mystery and adventure. Everything that was done or said was relating to that next clue or piece of the puzzle. The author left you wanting more at the end with many questions such as, "Is the head of the coven her father?", "What is Laney", " Why is Kiera getting dizzy?", and "Why did Laney not tell Oliver about her "dream?"
I can't wait for the next book. I have burnt out on young adult novels but once I began reading and entering her world I couldn't put it down. This book is great for the Twilight fans that have grown older and like stories much like Vampire Diaries. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed Laney. The first few chapters reminded me of Twilight and my first thought was it was going to be a lot like Twilight but it quickly turned into its own story.
I really like the mythology Joann used for her vampires. They are different from the majority of vampires out there. I also found myself giggling throughout the novel (the boyfriend looked at me funny many times) with Joann humorous writing. I enjoy the Twilight joke that Joann included in a effective way.
I finished this novel in one sitting I couldn’t put it down I needed to find out what was going to happen between Laney and Oliver. Oliver has been crowned the new “it” vampire. Edward please step down you have been over thrown. Oliver’s character is way more complex than Edward and he doesn’t look at Laney like he wants to eat her up. He only looks at her in his lovey dovey way. If Laney and Oliver were a real life people you would want to throw stuff at them and tell them to get a room their love for each other is so strong. Personally I’m jealous of it.
Laney is a great first novel to start the series. I can’t wait for the next installment. I have soo many questions that need answering!
The Results:
Rating: 4 out of 5
Would I let my 15 year old sister read: Yes – but there is some sexual tension that younger readers may not be mature enough to handle.

Overall Review: I opened this book, and I think it attached itself to my hand! I could not put it down! I kept thinking I had hit a stopping spot, only to find myself drawn in for more. A fun and action packed adventure full of mystery and romance. The characters became people to me and I felt a keen sense of interest in what was happening to them. The descriptions were such that they helped me to see what the characters looked like—and who they were—without stopping or slowing down the pace. I was completely involved in the story and can’t stop thinking about it even now. Joann I. Martin Sowles adds a fun breath of fresh air for fans of vampire paranormal fantasy books. The only drawback: Cliffhanger!! Now I am aching to read the rest of the series! Overall Rating is 4 out of 5 stars!
The flip side to this super fun story: there was quite a bit of language sprinkled throughout. It was never overwhelming or extreme (no ‘rated R’ words, and maybe only one every couple of pages), but it was present—especially when the main character was irritated or angry (or super excited). There was a very intense scene in a bar where a character becomes very drunk and his actions and words become rude and obscene. The two main characters become very close and there is a lot of kissing. A character admits to sleeping with her boyfriend. Two main characters discuss taking their relationship further (often). As this is a book with vampires, there is quite a bit of violence. Mostly it’s running from the ‘bad’ vampires who are trying to destroy them. There is one scene where the main character has her eyes closed so as not to see a disturbing deed, but describes the sounds (she throws up after). The chase scenes are edge-of-your-seat intense! Rated for over 18 due to the mature subject content.

English version
Laney is the first book in the Brookehaven Vampire Series. I loved!
The characters in this book are enjoyable, a mixture of paranormal creatures, an evil character, but seriously EVIL. I hate him.
In the beginning, the love affair is tender, but at the same time, that kind of chemistry between the couple, which keeps you sighing and praying more. I really liked the relationship between them was developed gradually and not overnight. Oliver is in love with Laney and is not afraid to show it, that's incredible.
I want to see more of Laney's friends in the next book, because I have many doubts about them. I also need to check if what I think of Laney and his father is true.
Mrs. Sowles wrote a beautiful story filled with unforgettable characters and charismatic. A story filled with action, love and new things about vampires, creating a different world and completely charming. This is undoubtedly the best YA vampire book that I've read this year. Strongly recommended.

This book is the first installment in a new series called The Brookehaven Vampires. In this story we are introduced to Laney Alexander, a 19 year old sophomore attending college in a small town in Northern California. She lives off campus in an apartment with her best friend since ninth grade, Kiera. Laney's mother died when she was two and her father was so grief-stricken he was unable to care for her, so he let her aunt, Lilly, raise her. He still provides for her financially and she wants for nothing.
On the first day of classes Laney and Kiera meet Oliver, the extremely handsome new guy from Reno, Nevada. And as it turns out, he's the new roommate of the girls' best guy friend, Carter.
Laney is absolutely mesmerized by Oliver and can't understand what her attraction to him is. He has her tongue-tied and awakens a sensual part of her that she didn't know existed! Aunt Lilly is not at all happy to discover that Laney is so smitten with this new guy and begins to withdraw from Laney. Could Aunt Lilly know something that Laney doesn't?
When Laney meets Oliver's sister, Julz, she's given a rather chilly reception. Oliver's niece Hayden and Hayden's dog Lola, a large Brookehaven Sheppard, are quite gracious towards Laney, however.
As the story unfolds, Laney learns that all the mythological creatures she's studied in school are real, and the most startling revelation is that her boyfriend is a vampire! Laney's world is turned upside-down when she becomes the target of a vengeful vampire, Oliver's twin brother, Oscar.
While Oliver is doing everything in his power to save Laney and Julz from Oscar, we find that there is a quite organized coven led by D. Could this D be someone that Laney already knows?
Once I picked up this book I couldn't put it down, I read it straight through in one sitting. It was a LONG night! There were several references to Twilight which I found to be quite amusing and a nice "shout out" to Stephenie Meyer.
In one part of the story Laney decides that it's all too much and she tries to break up with Oliver. I felt her anguish and cried right along with her. It was heart breaking and I was impressed that I was so involved with the story.
Not sure when the second installment is due to be released, but rest assured, I'll be there to read it!

Laney was so great! I am totally in love with Oliver, and LOVED the way the book described N. CA. I felt like I was in Chico or somewhere similar. Laney was one of the best books I read this year. I cannot wait for the next one so I can crawl into my closet hidey hole and devour it!

Laney Alexander has a surprise waiting for her as she begins her sophomore year at college. Tall and gorgeous, the new guy, Oliver Knight, captivates her as soon as she lays eyes on him. They have all the same classes, and he even lives in the same apartment complex. She doesn't find out Oliver isn't just another guy until an attack on the two of them by Oliver's vengeful twin forces his superior strength, eyesight, and fangs out of hiding. Already smitten, Laney takes it in stride. What she doesn't take in stride is the mystery behind his sister, who seems to hate Laney on sight. Oliver won't give her details, but Laney who has a bit of a jealous side, needs to know. There's a reason for the brothers need for vengeance as well. And, Laney's aunt doesn't think much of Oliver but won't tell Laney why.
Joann I. Martin Sowles sets up an interesting story, especially with the mystery behind Oliver's family and her aunt's dislike of her beau. Her vampires have some differences from others currently populating contemporary fiction such as an ability to eat raw foods and bear the sun with just dark glasses. She explains daily life for vampires well, leaving few questions from the reader.
The book starts off slowly, and mention of Oliver's beauty on every page became tiresome. Some of the flirting and kissing scenes between Laney and Oliver were too "sweet" for my personal taste. Laney also seemed not to pick up on things that would make me wonder, like why her boyfriend never eats. Sowles also includes a parallel storyline between Oliver's roommate and Laney's roommate, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere.
The story picked up pace once some action started and the intrigue in the storyline became more apparent. Hopefully, we'll find out more about the family intrigue in the next book, but unfortunately, this one didn't stand above the pack for me.

Laney, a sophomore college student from a small town, meets the charming and very handsome stranger, Oliver.
She is looking for love and can't believe he is there at every turn. He involves himself in her life more and more and she eventually falls in love with him. Although the attraction was there from the very beginning.
When she does find out he is a vampire, she begins to accept it. They cannot live without each other. He reveals to her at one point that he is 35-years-old, and that vampires age very slowly, but to Laney, it doesn't matter.
She relies on his protection and wants him at her side constantly. With her life at risk, she accepts the consequences.
Overall, it was a somewhat page-turning book - an easy read that kept your attention. It was a great love story with a humorous reference to Twilight.

Going into her second year of college, Laney Alexander is still undecided where her future is leading. She has no real career goal in mind, and having never lived anywhere other than this sleepy little college town, she feels like there is a whole world out there she needs to discover.
He feels something come over him, and in that one moment in time Oliver Knight knows he has found the one. She is beautiful, feisty, and in more danger than she can possibly comprehend.
He likes her! Laney can hardly believe the most gorgeous man she has ever laid eyes on wants to be with her just as much as she wants to be with him. Of course he is a total distraction in class, but she would much rather lose herself in his gaze than listen to some stodgy old professor any day. Laney and her Knight become nearly inseparable, their bond getting stronger by the day, and Laney is about to learn why. Oliver is so much more than he seems, and once the initial shock wears off, Laney’s decision to remain by his side will reveal a world to her that she could never have imagined to be real.
Teen hearts will throb at the sweet sensuality growing between Laney and her very dashing young man, Oliver. Each time they venture out in the open together you will hold your breath, anxiously awaiting their next adventure. This story introduces you to a world of young love, and is chock full of toothy hotties. And though I do feel this is mainly geared toward a younger reader, it is filled with excitement and mounting suspense.

Laney and Kiera are college roommates, and the best of friends. Laney doesn’t know yet what to do with her life, so she goes to school with her friend. A new guy named Oliver shows up at college on the first day and is totally hot! Laney can’t stop thinking about him. What’s even better, he is guy friend Carter’s new roommate; and Kiera has a big crush on Carter.
Oliver and Laney are attracted to each other, and it only helps that they always run into one another. There is a secret to Oliver though, and the reason why he is there.
I absolutely loved this book. The beginning was very girly (with lots of ogling, which was funny) and the whole book was very teen romantic. There are a few Twilight moments, but it is clear to see the difference between the two books. The story plot is very original, and I thought the addition of the dog into Oliver’s family was fantastic. Some of Laney’s mood swings are a little strange, but Oliver seems to cope with them alright. The ending of the book left me wanting to know more — like when’s the sequel coming out?

I haven't had many good experiences with vampire novels. Maybe it was because I chose the wrong books. So when I started Laney, I didn't know what to expect. As it turned out, Laney was the good experience in this genre, I needed.
I like that Laney is shown as a college student. It makes her more relatable (for me). I have not read many YA novels with main protagonists in college. At first, I was a bit doubtful about the novel because it reminded me too much of Twilight. I was afraid it was going the same way as Twilight. But as the story progressed, it was quite different from what I was expecting. The constant reference to how "gorgeous" Oliver was bugged me quite a bit. I am really tired of the "beautiful, mysterious" guys. However I liked how Laney is depicted. She actually had a backbone and genuinely seems to care about her friend. I think the romance between Laney and Oliver is really sweet. At first, I felt Laney was behaving too foolishly. But then I thought - "Don't all young girls act silly sometimes?" I think, most of us have been through the phase where we liked a guy and every time we saw that guy, it made us act all childish and awkward!
Eventually as the romance between Laney and Oliver develops, that's when the actual action begins. If you like action-packed plots, I assure you there's enough of that in the novel to pique your interest. Moreover there's humor and a mystery element too. The book does end with a few questions unresolved, but hopefully they will be resolved in the next book in the series. Laney is an edge-of-the-seat novel with enough, unlimited action and a sweet romance to keep you hooked.
Quotes:
"I had an eerie feeling. Fear began to rush through me and my heart started to race. There were
too many places in the shadows of the fence for someone to hide. I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I started to back away towards the stairs,
keeping my eyes on the shadows. My head was throbbing a tiny bit. I spun around and started to run for the stairs and smacked into someone. I screamed."
"I saw what looked like fangs. This can't be happening. My breath hitched. I was too scared to move or scream, afraid he'd slam me against the car again and this time I'd fade out completely."

I recently finished Laney: The Brookehaven Vampires by Joann I. Martin Sowles, a self-published debut novel by a stay-at-home wife/home schooling mother. Let me start off by revealing my rating for Laney. I decided to rate this book 4/5 stars. Me, being a vampire addict, decided to read Laney and was glad that I did because it was a pretty good book.
Laney chroncicles the life of a young college girl named Delaney (Laney, for short) and her best friend, Kiera. Throughout the book the main plot focusses on Laney wanting to be with dreamy, heroic Oliver Knight. Of course, Oliver isn't just your average gorgeous college jock, no. There is something special about Oliver and Laney pegs him as unique from the very beginning. I enjoyed how Laney gradually, yet surely, fell in love with Oliver. Although, love at first sight is always a good road to take. :)
At first, I will admit, Laney reminded me of The Twilight Saga (One of my FAVORITE book series) just because of how Laney compared Oliver to being overly gorgeous on every page (hey, there's no problem with that...just saying.) :)
As the book progressed, Laney became more and more distinct and shied away from Twilight with every passing page. I love how Joann I. Martin Sowles wrote her characters. I loved Oliver's family and couldn't get enough of Julz (my favorite character...besides Oliver...but Julz still semi-beats him.)
Laney was a book that I was able to take my time reading, at least at the beginning. I paced myself and took my time reading the first hundred pages. After that hundredth page mark, I absolutely devoured Laney and am anxiously anticipating the sequel: Darkess.
Joann I. Martin Sowles created a world full of mythical creatures in Laney and kind of left us on a cliffhanger at the end, so I'm excited to see further character and plot development. If you like vampires, romance, or young adult fiction books in general, pick up Laney at your local bookstore today.

Review: So, everyone knows how I feel about vampires, right? Right? Well, in case you’re one of the few who don’t, let me remind you. When I was younger, I was terrified of vampires. I remember having a coloring book with a playful vampire in it and would freak out and had to rip the page up. My sister would scare me at night dressing as a vampire and I still remember the one movie I saw when I was about five. But then came along four books and a spin-off and they turned these scary and terrifying creatures into somewhat of a joke for me.
The only thing I had against vampires became something so vile, might I say, that I ended up with no weapon against them. My natural friend became a pansy enemy. Instead of melting them, it made them sparkle. Like glitter. Glitter-full vampires. It makes me sad. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are certain shows I like watching and are my guilty pleasure. And I will go to the theaters to watch some killer vampire movies. But I sort of had this anti-vampire novel thing going on. The trend had to end!
So it was with very cautious steps that I began to read Laney. At first I kind of held it afar, I’m not really into the teenage romance with a vampire, the love of her life type of novel. I’m more of a deep story. But I gave it a chance. I’m glad I actually did.
Laney is about a girl named Delaney or Laney for short, who dorms in college with her best friend Kiera. Unlike certain female characters, this one is actually pretty fun. She’s very perky and outgoing, loves to have fun, and I think it’s safe to say a Cali girl. Right away I clicked not only with her but with everyone and everything in the environment. It’s very similar to where I live so it wasn’t hard getting into the characters shoes. Even if it is a girl. I just created my own shoes. Preferably, Nike’s. High tops.
Joann I. Martin Sowles, or Joann Sowles for short doesn’t waste any time getting to the point. We immediately meet this interesting, non-brooding, normal guy who goes by the name of Oliver Knight. He drives a black car, with tinted windows, wears sunglasses outside, and carries a stainless steel water bottle with him because he is “eco-friendly.” Instantly, Laney feels attracted to Oliver and one might think, “oh no,” but it’s quickly regaining itself when Laney explains how she has no reason to fall for this dude and can’t explain it. So like you, the reader, she is perplexed.
As the story progress’ we find out about the vampires and about their powers. How they drink actual human blood by owning a truck that goes around where people can donate their blood. They use the blood and take some to keep themselves sustained. How newer vampires have a phobia of the sun and think they will melt but, they just have very sensitive eyes and have to wear the sunglasses. How the reason they don’t like garlic is because they have better senses, so the smell is too strong. But what got me interested is that Joann Sowles doesn’t make them to be a different creature all together. She makes them as if they were an upgraded version of humans. They are humans just with different attributes. So you feel close to them and not afraid.
As with every vampire novel, there are good ones and bad ones. There are also in-between ones. Ones that we don’t really know their true alliance or there’s something more to them. The conflict basically revolves around one thing, revenge. The bad vampire wants revenge for what happened. And he will do anything to get it.
Joann Sowles certainly left her mark with this unique novel. She could have left it off with just the vampires but she continued by adding other mythical creatures, like werewolves who transform at the full moon, unicorns and even dragons, whose talons are used by Slayers. Oh yea, I said it, there are vampire Slayers.
All in all, Joann Sowles is an above-average writer. I only say this because I’m afraid of overusing the word awesome. Her writing style is simple yet rich, and her stories and characters are full. There were times where I didn’t like certain characters because they were too over-protecting, hint hint main vampire. But that was left behind as I finished the book and was left by a cliff-hanger that made me want to read more. I certainly can not wait for the sequel. Kudos to Joann Sowles, and let’s hope that she continues to master her writing.
Laney Alexandra lives a normal life, in a small cottage town; she lives with her best friend Kiera and has moved out of home away from her Aunts to live her own life. Her first day back at college - she meets Oliver Knight, dreamy, charming, mysterious and incredibly good looking and Laney finds herself mesmerized by him, - his good looks and green eyes draw her in.
Laney is in her sophomore year, and this is where her adventures begin. In time, her and Oliver spend time together and fall for each other. Oliver is witty, charming and makes Laney’s heart skip a beat, she is drawn into Oliver’s world. He is not who she thought he was …..
His sister - Goth princess doesn’t like her, his family has secrets she is not so sure about, and his family all seem to be different. Oliver’s brother hates him and is out to make his life hell and life is not at all what it seems.
Oliver’s charms and whoos Laney, she falls head over heels for him vice versa there love is magnetic, magical and romantic... Lovey dovey if you may call it. Oliver would do anything for Laney; even die for her in order to protect her – but from whom and what and why?
In time discoveries are made and Laney is thrown into a world she didn’t know existed, vampires are real not a fairy tale, werewolves roam the earth and evil exits in minions. Will Laney give up her mortality to be with the one she loves, or will evil get there first and destroy it all? Oliver will stop at nothing to protect Laney from the evil that lurks. Can’t he protect her from himself, and the commitment he is willing to give? Will she be the one to give up her mortality to be with the one she loves? Turns of events change and things become a turmoil will Laney survive long enough to be with the one she loves for ever?
I really enjoyed this book at first I thought it reminded me of Twilight, certain things seemed familiar but in time IT WAS NOTHING like it, references were made I found amusing eg they watched Twilight on there movie night - but Laney has its own storyline and you won’t be disappointed. I was giggling at certain parts, and grinning and this alone was enjoyable when a book can make you feel like this while reading - its done its job!!!
Oliver’s character is full of emotion and is very protective of Laney. He does not come across as wanting to eat her, ((aka Twilight) or any normal vampire book or movie he doest not want to devour her just the love he shows her is incredibly romantic and sweet and honestly this melted my heart alone. * SWOON * They are adults in college so this part is realistic in its own way. The love is cute, lustful and very dreamy. Laney knows what she wants and will get it - but at the same time relies upon Oliver to be her protector. The vampire in him does not scare her it excites her, this along is a challenge for Poor Oliver.
The characters introduced into the book I really enjoyed - Felix I envisaged ** swoon ** and other characters blended in well with the storyline and were well described- They created the world in which Joanne has made in the Brookhaven Vampires. The chapters flowed smoothly, fluently running from one to the next, the storyline evident and not predictable. The chemistry between Laney and Oliver was explosive, and very realistic. Joanne created he own vampire world, her own myths behind the vampire world. This I found enlightening and different I enjoyed it. Action packed, with romance, thrills and lustful moments, great characters, and plot. The only downfall I could find in this read was grammar errors, but this by no means detered me from liking the book. I am looking forward to book 2 in The Brookhaven Vampires series.
:)I look forward to more of Joannes books ;)
Brought in e format but will definetly buy the book to shelf it and read again !!

After longing to read this book since it came out last year, I was lucky enough to actually win it. As soon as it came in the mail I ripped it open and wasn't able to put it down. Plus with a story that is being based in a town that is literally an hour away, it helped create such an amazing visual in my head. I knew exactly where all the places Joann was taking Laney, her college, the bars, everything.
Going to college isn't an easy task for anyone, but when Laney runs into Oliver Knight on the first day of school, her focus is on her new favorite subject.... him. The chemistry with Laney & Oliver was apparent from the start, you can tell that he's on a mission to claim Laney's heart when he starts showing up everywhere she is. Though she can't explain it, but she finds herself drawn to Oliver, like a moth to a flame. Laney can feel that underlying danger when she's in his presence, but knows that it's never danger towards her. While feeling safe in Oliver's arms, she can't explain the weird connect that she feels whenever Oliver is around his family and his sister Julz. There's just something there that Laney can't put her finger on.
After having the truth revealed and coming to terms with what Oliver truly is, Laney knows that her place is by his side. Being the one he loves, and unconditionally loving him seems to come more natural to her then breathing. (even with an army of rogue vampires after them).
With chemistry, suspense, and action to no end, The Brookehaven Vampires will be a series that I will follow until the author decides she's had enough. Joann left so many questions unanswered, but in a good way, that you'll only be highly anticipating the next novels release.

If you enjoyed Twilight you will definetly enjoy this book. Laney was lots of fun, and although it was somewhat remenicent of Twilight I think I liked it better. The characters were all really great and Laney's inner thoughts cracked me up sometimes. All of the detail Joann gave was really great and she managed to add not just vampires but other mythical creatures into her story as well. I also have to say that Oliver, he sounds MUCH hotter than Edward Cullen, and with a last name like Knight think of all the great things you could write on a valentines card to him! I'm sure you're all going "Really, this is just another vampire novel." And yeah, it is another vampire novel, but I think that it was really enjoyable. It has this air around it that made it hard for me to stop reading it. That and all the chapters had titles, which is something you don't see that often but I really enjoy. It really is a shame that this book is pretty much only avalible through online order because I'm sure it would be much more widely known if it was something sold in stores. Laney is definetly a fun quick read for all vampire lovers (who don't mind some romance) and all of you who enjoyed the Twilight novels (even if you say you don't, but really do just for appearence you should check this book out).

English version
Since I first started reading Laney I noticed it wasn't kind of the typical YA novel about vampires, it had a little extra something, perhaps because of the fresh way it has been written.
A girl finds a mysterious handsome boy and something about him doesn't feel natural, I know it sounds a little well known, anyway, I found a very fun and entertaining novel, one of those you read all the way with a smile on your face.
I liked this new concept about vampires where they can be really dangerous but also very civilized (not exaggerating)and all of the new things that come to Laney's life (including some family secrets) as she falls for Oliver.
What to say about Oliver? He is certaintly a one-of-a-kind character and that's because of his dark past and also because of the side he shows with Laney. It makes their love beliveable from the begginig until the end of the story (at least this first part of the story).
I actually loved reading it, the drama, the emotion, the action, everything of this exciting novel, and definitely feel like (more like dying to) reading the next one, can't wait to know more about the brookehaven vampires and our main characters destiny.

Laney missed her aunt Lilly but was happy to be settling in with her BFF, Kiera, in their own apartment and starting her second year at the college for which her small Northern California town was famous Walking into her first class, the two of them were excited to start the year, but when Kiera suddenly took sick and the gorgeous boy who had caught her eye came to their aid and helped get Kiera to the nurse’s office, Laney knew that things were going to be much different this year. What she didn’t know was how different her life was going to be when she falls for a vampire and their lives get caught up in a feud that might destroy everything and everyone she had ever loved.
Oliver Knight was sent to watch Laney…and watch her he did. Not that it was a difficult task, but falling for her so hard and so fast was not what he had planned when he walked into her life. There were threats out there, threats that Laney had no idea about, but when Oliver could not stop himself from becoming more and more a part of her life, he drew on every ounce of power and skills he has to save her from an enemy that has more than a personal agenda at stake.
Was it a coincidence that the sexy new student happened to live in the same apartment complex that Laney and Kiera lived in and, on top of that, was the roommate of Carter, a good friend of hers and the boy Kiera had crushed on since kindergarten? The sudden illness her BFF had come down with was very strange to them; Kiera had never ever been sick in her life and the up and down symptoms were confusing to both but had one mark on the plus side: it made Carter aware of what was right in front of him and the two were now a couple. With this turn of events leaving Laney a lot more time to spend with the sexy Oliver, she had no complaints with the current situation between them. As the two begin to feel more and more for each other, Laney is increasingly more concerned when another woman seems to find a way to pull Oliver away from her. As the two try and work out their relationship, Laney finds herself attacked, and more honest answers are needed when she demands to know everything from the man who is stealing her heart. What she is told is pure fantasy; vampires do not exist, neither do werewolves or other paranormal creatures. But when she has to face the truth about the surrounding chaos, Laney finds a way to not only accept her fate but also prove that she is strong enough to face anything that comes at her—even if it is a vampire with a need for vengeance that will stop at nothing to get what he wants and make those who try to stop him pay.
I have to say, I really “hate” Young Adult books. I get it, I really do. You want the young readers to continue reading so you hook them with a fantastic story then boom, you leave said story with the most amazing cliffhanger so they will pick up the next book and read some more. Great for the young reader that is captivated and continues their love for books throughout their entire life but bad for those of us who just want more of the story. This is the case with Laney and is probably my biggest complaint with this new series. I loved this book (well, right up until the cliffhanger) and am being honest when I say I cannot wait for the next installment in the Brookhaven Vampire series. This book hooked me right from the start ,and the smart and at times sassy Laney was the perfect mate to the dark and sexy Oliver. Their chemistry popped from the pages, and I was unable to put the book down as I waited to find out the truth behind what really brought them together; some facts which still remain hidden make the wait for the next book even more excruciating.
I hope that the further books in this series bring to light more of Oliver’s and Laney’s pasts and more of the secrets hidden from Laney and the real reason she is so important to the vampires as well as focus on how Kiera, Carter and her other friends fit into the puzzle and into the paranormal world. Laney was a great first novel in the Brookhaven Vampire series and it has definitely made it a must read series for me in the future.

Laney is the first book in the The Brookehaven Vampires series by Joann I. Martin Sowles. This is an exciting new vampire series, but beware...do not judge this book by the opening chapters. Laney begins very slowly. The first half of this book is setting the stage for the events to come, with a gradual build up to the breakneck, edge of your seat action and suspense of the final chapters. Delaney "Laney" Alexander is a fairly normal college Sophomore. She's of average intelligence, average height, average weight, and average motivation for school, but when her overachieving roommate has a fainting spell moments after meeting the hottest guy on campus Laney's life becomes anything but average. Laney and hot new guy Oliver Knight have an unnatural magnetic attraction that quickly becomes an obsession...for both of them. Some readers may see parallels with another popular vampire series (there are vamps and an overprotective stalker type boyfriend), but I found myself completely sucked into the second half of Laney and cannot wait for book two. The chemistry between the characters, though not always healthy, works. Young adult paranormal romance fans will love the steamy tension between Laney and Oliver and there is just enough scary "oh my god do not do up that alley" suspense and fang action to thrill urban fantasy fans. A wonderful beginning to a promising new vampire series.
I recommend Laney (The Brookehaven Vampires #1) to readers of paranormal romance, young adult, urban fantasy, speculative fiction, and especially to fans of vampire fiction. Laney may appeal to fans of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz, the Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick, and Soul In Love by Vone Savan.

I will not lie. When I first read the description of this book in my head I said, "Oh no. Not another Twilight." As I started to read it, it reminded me a little bit of Twilight but it has it's own twist. I loved this book. What drew me in was the prologue. It is very unique. I never read a prologue like it. Another thing that really grabbed me about this book is that the characters are little older than normal.
Laney is a normal college girl. She graduated a year early from high school to go to college with her friends. She was raised by her Aunt and her mysterious Dad continues to foot the bill. She meets Oliver and wow. Just wow! The chemistry between them is great. I definitely LOVE the bonding idea. If you have read this you know what I mean and if you haven't read this then you need to so you know what I am talking about.
Things start to turn when Laney and Oliver become closer and a wonderful adventure begins. Once I finished this book I had so many theories. This book really makes you think. In every book I read I can normally guess where the book is going but at the end of this one I am left with a very big question mark.
I can't wait for the second book. I think this will be a wonderful series for everyone to get pulled into. Recommended for everyone!!!
Rated: 5 out of 5

After stopping a week without reading anything, I got this *winks* I had won in a contest, signed and dedicated. The book had not read much because it is among the most known and is self-published, is the first self-published book I read, and thank the gods I had a good experience and layers in the future give you a chance to self-published. I confess that it would be more of the same, new guy, girl who is hooked before you know, honey everywhere ... already understand:) and besides, there are vampires.
What happened? Well, I found everything I wrote above but I still liked it she learned well enough to attract attention, he literally opened my eyes peer to peer reading and reading and reading. It's quite something I was looking back to catch as did the Hunger Games or Shadow Hunters (the first time that I read) and yes, I admit, as did the Saga Crepusculiana: / This book had it all, love , action, friendship, struggles, and suspense, suspense and mystery that I became hysterical: I finished the book with the nerves on the edge waiting to reveal omgIwantedtokillsomebody alguuuuna more thing.
What it would emphasize is that the relationship between Laney and honey everywhere Oliver belt but thank god not as much as Edward and Bella, let's say on a scale of 1 to 100, Twilight has a 90% and 65% Laney; had not been so, I would not have tolerated something sweet in my life anymore.
However, what makes up the most points you in some way, the realism of the life of a teenager (bueh, not so much >.<). If I have explained to the latter, because it is not capable for all. When I read a YA book, I usually realize that the protests are almost perfectly fine. Good girls, good students (this is not necessary), good in almost everything, and not very good at something that differ from the rest for the prince to see them (aka: bad in sport or incredibly stupid). Or the opposite, really bad super bad at all. However, Laney is... normal. I mean, not like the school and have average grades. Not one of those blessed by genetics but not too badly.
Laney has normal teenage life (up to good, things change): she drinks alcohol, goes to parties with her friend, as someone living normal school. Not if I'm expressing it, but in a nutshell: I was identified, and I happened to many books. If I imagined that I Katniss and launched an arrow perfectly even though my arms are a flan, if I dream I'm Claire and Jace kiss me, if I spoke only with Patch in the privacy of the group to return from school, if I fantasized about Nora hit in the face ... but what happened was "more normal" and could come to happen to me or my sister but I knew it was pretty weird.
Leaving aside the mellow honey from the leaves, and very imaginative scenes that could come to resemble other in a not so parallel dimension, Laney is great.
Score: 3.5/5~Very Good. Highly recommended.

I am such a sucker when it comes to a Vampire story. I would never turn down a book based on Vampires. When Joann reached out to Good Choice Reading asking for a review, there was absolutely no way I was going to turn her down. I've read great things about Laney and had my eye on this book for a while now.
Laney has a slow start, but eventually picks up and once it does it is just a non-stop ride from page to page. There were a lot of similarities to other vampire books out today, but what I liked the most was that Joann explained a lot of things that other authors didn't feel the need to add to their books. For example: menstrual cycle for a woman. How can a Vampire be around at that time of the month? Yes, LOL she explained this in the book and I was laughing out loud when I read this. Though, there were lots of similarities to other books, there were also lots of things that were different. I would go into details, but then I would be giving away some spoilers.
Laney is the main character and I love her! I wish she were real and MY best friend. I was laughing so hard at some of the things she would say or think to herself. She is very blunt and daring. She reminded me of myself in lots of ways. Once she set her eyes on Oliver, she knew immediately that he needed to be hers. Things do move a little slow between the two, but I liked that. I thought it gave us more time to get to know them both and fall in love with their relationship. Of course, once they started to take things to the next level, fighting to not eat each other was very hard LOL.
Another thing I really liked was reading about Carter and Keira's relationship. I thought they were really sweet and fun to get to know. Everything in the book is explained really well and very easy to picture. There are lots of secrets and tons of shocking things you learn about characters you wouldn't have even thought twice about. Every single person you are introduced too in the book, plays some kind of part in the story.
I am happy Joann gave me the chance to read and review her book. I am looking forward to the second one in the series and cannot wait. Laney is an easy and fast read. Not to long, not to short, just the perfect size. I recommend this book, especially to Vampire lovers like myself.
4 out 5 Stars

I love when I read a book from a author that is not well known and some how slipped under the cracks and the book is Great! So glad Joann contact us to review her book, if not I would have missed a great read and about Vampires. You know how much I adore those paranormal creatures. The book begins slow but do think its stay like that thought the pages, it starts to build up momentum until its speed right by you. The plot was good and it leaves enough for book two. Laney definitely has great drama, action and Vampires. That combination will help anyone grab on to the book and not put it down until you are done. The only negative is, I could have done without all the description of what the characters were wearing. For others that might be something they like to have as part of the book, possibly the younger crowd. So make sure you jot down the author's name and read this series.
Story is centered around Laney, she lives in a small town in California. She meets Oliver, the good looking new person. The have instant chemistry. Of course love can never be so simple when it involves a boyfriend that well lets just say he is not a normal human being. Tune in the family and a bit of drama and you got a good story. The characters all involved in Laney are memorable and lovable. Stories like Laney take you back to when you were 18 and in love, of course I didn't have the sexy Vampire in High School.

Laney Alexander is your typical collage student. She has a roommate, close friends and an old beater for a car. On her first day of school her room mate happens to notice a cute guy checking her out. They both think nothing of it until he starts showing up in their classes, and starts making eye contact with Laney. Laney has no idea that the gorgeous hunk who keeps checking her out just happens to be a vampire named Oliver Knight.
Laney and Oliver are about to make magic happen between each other. Hopefully they will be able to be together forever. That is if Oliver's nut job vampire brother can be held at bay. He is determined to kill Oliver's soul mate Laney as retaliation for taking his soul mate away from him. Will everything work out for Laney and Oliver, or will it cost so much more?
I really enjoyed this novel, and loved reading about Laney's and Oliver's hot romantic relationship. This is a book, that will have you hooked right from the beginning. Also this book is full non-stop excitement that will have your heart racing. I can't wait to read the sequel to this book. Great job Joann, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to review it Laney!

Oh Oliver! *sigh…. * Oliver…. how I wish I could jump into “Laney” and take over her body! lol Joann has written a paranormal YA novel that has everything a reader wants and then some. The story is gripping, the writing fantastic, the characters phenomenal, and to top it off, refreshing elements not often seen in YA books.
Out of the many, MANY reasons I love this book, one that stands out in my mind the most is the fact that both Oliver and Laney are virgins. I *love* that they are virgins at college! Not very often does this happen in real life or in books and I think it sends a message to young adults. It is ok to wait! It really is, and love is still possible if you do.
I also love the fact that Joann has mixed the “normal” vampire traits with new traits of her own. The Brookhaven vamps are able to walk around in the daylight (without sparkling, hehe) and with minimal trouble. They don’t feed from people’s necks (at least the “good” ones don’t), and there is a slight chance of successfully having children. LOVE the new aspects and the vampire world that Joann has created.
Oliver and Laney are wonderful characters and I truly enjoyed getting to know them. Their love is so pure and wonderful, and even though they have hurdles to overcome, their love is so strong that you get the feeling they could overcome anything short of being taken away from each other. Following them on their journey from the first meeting to becoming inseparable was a great experience.
Laney was a wonderful read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys YA, paranormal, and even adult romance. Read it. NOW. I promise you won’t be sorry.
Rating: 5/5 Fairies!

4 Stars - Laney, the first installment in the Brookehaven Vampires series By author Joann I. Martin Sowles was a fast paced story that easily swept me up in it’s whirlwind and dangled in front of me the promise of more. With some interesting and some fascinating characters – both human and paranormal – Sowles’s love for Vampires comes blazing through.
When Laney returns to a new college year she moves in with her long time best friend Keira. Their relationship was great and each girl had their own personality. I loved how different they were from each other; they complimented each other in their friendship making it easy and relatable. Laney is strong, independent and caring. Not to mention blunt and funny. I found myself laughing out loud here and there through the story. It’s always a plus when a book, character and writing can do just that and Sowles addition of humor was more than welcome. Another friend of the two is Carter. The relationships before the relationship faze between Keira and Carter was sweet and endearing.
When Oliver Knight walks into their lives, things start to change. Laney is instantly drawn to him and wants to learn more. As luck would turn out, he’s Carter’s new roommate. Oliver is… how do I explain such a swoon-worthy character? His relationship with Laney is slow and I could feel Laney’s frustration right along with her. While some books the romantic side of things often happens fast, Sowles’ has changed things up and let both Laney and Oliver get to know each other pretty well before moving things further.
Around the middle of the book, things fly by and craziness occurs. I couldn’t read fast enough through all the events that happened so quickly. While some aspects of the story and characters reminded me of other books, Sowles has put enough of her own twist to things, making this all her own.
All in all, I was extremely happy I had the chance to read Laney and am patiently waiting for the next in the series - Darkness. It’s the characters and Sowles twists and turns that made this an absorbing read. If you have a love for Vampires, as I do, don’t pass this great new series and author by without taking a further look.

I was so excited to receive this book for review as it had been on my wish list for quite a while. I’ve had this kind of soft spot for vampires ever since I read and fell in love with Twilight, and this is definitely a book that Twilight fans will love!
If I hadn’t known before hand, I would never have believed this book was Joann’s debut novel. She’s done a fantastic job with the writing. The plot is fun and exciting and there are lots of twists and turns. I simply could not guess what was going to happen next!
Like Twilight, we have a small town, vampires, werewolves and other paranormal nasty’s, but that’s where the plot similarities end. Not all the vampires in The Brookehaven Vampires are sexy hunks, although Oliver, the male love interest in the story most certainly was swoon worthy! I loved that although there was an instant attraction between Laney and Oliver, both were at first too shy to make the first move to let the other know and the romance moved at a nice smooth pace. I just hate it when the main characters are chomping all over each other immediately so it was nice and refreshing to watch these two adorable characters fall in love slowly.
Laney is definitely a page turner and I can’t wait to get my teeth into the second book in the series, Darkness, which is out later this summer. This is definitely one for all you Twilight lovers out there. It’s seriously good!
My rating: 5 stars

You will either love this book, or hate it. It is very much like Twilight, until it reaches the middle/almost end, then it becomes its own, but I personally LOVE it. I could not put the book down...I kept wanting to read more and more, so I am so glad this is a series, and can't wait for the next books! It is so suspensful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Whats going to happy next???
Stars- 5/5

I enjoyed reading a novel about someone older than me by a bit again. I found this novel a refreshing read after being in a reading fog for a few months. Joann has a style that has something, I can’t quite pick out that makes you want more and more.
I loved the characters so freaking much! I was laughing so hard then I was scared then in about five minutes I was blushing badly! Laney the character was just so enjoyable to read from her perspective. I know she was super strong and wanted things, yet she was extremely loyal and level headed, even though it seemed like she wasn’t. If that didn’t make sense, just know I lived her as an MC!
If you are a fan of vampires, I would definitely go for this book! If you aren’t well, it is still a fantastic read. At the end there is this huge cliffhanger and I want more now! Laney is a sexy read that will have you reeling! I just can’t wait for book two so I can peel back another layer of the story! WAIT did I mention the HOT HOT guy?!? Well there is this guy who needs to come and marry me! I hope you enjoy him as much as I did!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My thoughts: Laney is your average 18 year old college student. She lives with her best friend off campus and attends courses at a University.
On the first day of classes her roommate, Kiera, faints in English class and the gorgeous guy they had been checking out carries her to the nurses office. Laney and the guy, Oliver, hit it off fairly quickly. The attraction is pretty instantaneous and intense.
Things are not what they seem, of course, this is a paranormal romance story. Oliver has secrets. You will notice that it is the Brookehaven Vampires series. I think that is a huge hint as to what Oliver may be. He also doesn't eat in front of Laney and others. Hmmm....
There is a feud between Oliver and a rogue vampire. The other vampire is ruthless and wants revenge against Oliver. There is a deeper connection between them, but I will not reveal what it is, you will need to read the story.
The only concern that I had is for younger YA readers, There is quite a bit of sex talk and innuendo. It wasn't offensive, but I wouldn't recommend it to younger readers. Personally, I loved it and I am looking forward to the next installment. I have some unanswered questions that I am looking forward to finding out about. One of them has to do with Laney's parentage. (Joann, that's a hint for you!)
Thank you Joann for contacting me to read your story. I had actually noticed this book on goodreads and it was on my to read list when she contacted me. I jumped at the chance to read it, and I would again.

When she first laid eyes on the hansom new guy she couldn't help but fantasise what it would be like to be held in his arms. However it was not her but her best friend that first had that honour, albeit under the most undesirable of circumstances. She had never felt for anyone what she felt for him and it seems he fells the same way. So why then was her aunt, who is more like a best friend, so against the one person she could possibly love?
The more time she spends in his presence the more time she wants to spend with him. She could happily spend forever staring into his beautiful emerald green eyes and if she had her way she would. However there is more to this gorgeous boy them meets the eye. He is older then her, he never seems to eat, he avoids direct sunlight and makes numerous reference to the past. Luckily for him she has an open mind when it comes to relationships.
Laney is a love story between a mortal human and an immortal vampire. However it is neither his blood drinking nor her desirable blood that is standing in the way of these star crossed lovers, but his family and hers. Although the vampire romance has been done before this story has a way of sucking you in, and along with the romance there is danger, blood and a mystery left unsolved. If you thought Twilight was good then you'll love this series.

When I first saw this book, I had passed it a few times and was like ehhh and then finally I bought it. I was so glad I did it too! Joann creates a different world of vampires. She sucks you right into it and it feels like you are there in the book with these characters. I fell in love instantly with the main character Laney. This book keeps you guessing, you never know whats going to happen next and the ending keeps you wanting more. I recommend this to all you vampire lovers and everyone else :)

This book is a great vampire love story. It has all the things I love like Love and Vampires. The love story is written as a realistic story. It is not rushed by no means and it seems to be a love that lasts over time like in several books :)
This book has a stable and strong story line. The main characters (Oliver and Laney)seem realistic and not so deep that you cant associate with them. The secondary characters are well defined and described to in realistic detail.
The story had twists and turns that I didn't see coming and to me that makes it a good story. This book is definitely mantle worthy. If you love vampires and are in a twilight rut check out this book!
My score: 5 STARS
